Matthew’s portrait reads: On the night of October 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard was beaten, tortured and left to die. He was found, 18 hours later, nearly unrecognizable and bound to a fence. Matthew died six days later. Though his killers and their accomplices deny that sexual orientation was a motivation for the laying, Matthew’s murder garnered national attention and was the impetus for many hate-crime laws. Matthew was 21 years old. This occurred in Laramie, Wyoming.
#ArtToEndViolence is a series of paintings, watercolor and mixed media, dedicated to highlighting the violence experienced by Trans, Gay, and Black citizens within the United States. The titular piece to the series recently won an Award of Excellence in Fine Art at The California State Fair 2015. Pieces from the collection have appeared throughout California.
